Musical reinforcement is my way of gaining purchase on the interplay between dialogic engagement and the creative act. The hope is to establish a rhythm of output initiated by the author (me), and engaged, critiqued and contextualized by the reader (you).  While only a portion of the content on this blog will be audible, “musical reinforcement” and is about making creativity a dynamic and public process.

Here you will find two posts per week. One relating to my music, and one to my research. Rather than a space for finished products, you will find the creative process laid bare. Any and all comments and critiques are more than encouraged, they are the reason for this space.

I am a musician studying philosophy and anthropology whose work spans a wide array of interests. My writing is broadly aimed at the marginalization of humanistic and imaginative thinking in society, and critical theory as it speaks to human institutions. In my most recent paper, I examined Alcoholics Anonymous through the lens of settler colonial history and theory. Additional areas of interest include music and language, the history of the societal role of “the artist”, and the relationships between public health and inequality. While I am far from settling into an “intellectual home”, all of these topics will no doubt hang from its ceilings and adorn its walls.

Any of us who have undertaken creative endeavors know that establishing a rhythm of output is an ever-elusive thing that requires a weird combination of perseverance and light heartedness. Many of us also know the sacrifices necessary to devote one’s energies to imaginative work, including (but certainly not limited to) isolation and (at times) near-destitution. While the structure of our society is not always what I might call “imagination-friendly”, the plethora of web spaces available seem to be offering a source of community that ten years ago was unimaginable. I am not saying anything new here, but merely making my hopes and intentions clear. Let’s get to postin’!!
